What is Search Engine Optimization (seo)

what is Search Engine Optimization(seo)

Let us start from scratch. When we enter our keywords in the search engine, we get millions of results in a few seconds. We usually click on the links in the first page or the first few SERPs (Search engine results pages). Have you wondered why these web pages get to be in the “top”? Relevance might be a factor here but even then many results may have the same combination of keywords. Spider is a program executed by search engine which reads the contents in a website and assesses them for inclusion in it’s index. Based on it, the webpage gets a page rank which is a factor in the position of the link in SERP. Now comes in the concept of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
Why is SEO important ??

It is revealed by a survey that 94% of people click on the results on the first page itself and 63% click on the first three links. So having your website in the first result page has a direct impact on web traffic to your website and hence your business.
SEO has two components-On-site and Off-site

  1. On-site:As the name suggests it relates with the factors on the website like key-word placement and frequency, internal links, etc.
  2. Off-site:It relates with factors like creating links from other websites, knowing the competitors, etc.
Most of the companies have started using SEO and hence it has become necessary to benefit from SEO to stay in the competition.
Here are some simple techniques to optimize your website for search engines.
SEO
  1. Back link- The most important off-site method. Back links are basically links from other websites which leave a positive impact with the search engines. It is not only important to have more back links, but also have them from websites with authority(i.e. better page rank) and also with relevant content. It is also better to have deep links rather than to just the home page.
  2. Link structuring: It deals with how you design your website. It is suggested to give more links to the important page, the most important being, of course, the homepage. Links to pages with related content also helps.
  3. Keywords: If the keyword in the search is more frequently used in your webpage, i.e. if the keyword density is higher, it helps in the ranking. Remember to maintain the balance as your article must also not have too many occurrences of a single word which may not impress the reader. Also, variations to the keyword like using plurals, using both acronyms and their expansions and obvious synonyms give a boost. Also keywords near the top of the page get more preference.
  4. Title: Keywords in the title have the highest priority and hence choose your webpage title wisely.
  5. Header optimisation: Use header tags (<h1>, etc.) to highlight important phrases. Use italicisation and emphasis if possible.
  6. Know your competitor: Study about them and make plans to overtake them. But the best relation to have is … mutual back links
  1. Anchor Text: Whenever you use links use anchor text with keywords rather than the url itself. Eg. Tamooracademy is more SEO friendly hyperlink than www.tamooracademy.com
  2. Other Suggestions: Using original content, avoiding bad directories and not posting too many ads also helps to improve page rating.
